Nonsurgical Facials

How do lasers actually work to renew the complexion?

The word "laser" is an acronym representing "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." Lasers bounce and amplify light between lenses and mirrors to produce an intense beam of light that is able to travel over long distances with little or no divergence of the beam, coherent (moves in phase in time and space), and monochromatic (all photons are of the same wavelength). The strength and timing of the laser light can be precisely controlled, making the depth of the laser resurfacing more predictable in comparison to chemical peels or dermabrasion.

The pulsed Erbium Laser is the ideal choice for skin resurfacing. It uses computer-generated patterns to apply laser light in "pulses" for very accurate and rapid resurfacing. Today's Erbium laser is the most gentle laser currently available for skin resurfacing and probably the most popular. It allows for very rapid healing time (about seven days) and shorter periods of redness compared to the carbon-dioxide laser. With it, fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, blotchy pigmentary irregularities and acne scarring can be improved.

Lasers are mostly quite safe, but as with any medical procedure (including chemical peels and dermabrasion) there are potential complications. Scarring, pain, lack of result, infection, pigmentary changes, delayed healing and other risks are uncommon but possible. It's imperative to have your laser facial with a qualified plastic surgeon certified by the ASPS. Laser facials should always be performed by plastic surgeons or dermatologists who are best qualified to use ablative lasers that remove the upper layers of skin.

For optimal results, four to six laser facial treatments are usually recommended - and the results can be dramatic. If you start laser facial treatments now, you'll be right on schedule to look your best for the upcoming holiday party season.
